Pot-in-Pot Trees

“Quality Trees with Superior Roots”

Pot-in-Pot tree farming is a technique that has become the national trend in the industry and the Plantorium Greenhouse & Nursery is proud to offer it to you. Pot-in-Pot trees have many advantages over the traditional “Ball and Burlap” tree farming technique.

“Ball and Burlap,” or field grown trees have to be harvested in the spring before their buds break. When the trees are harvested at this time, 40-60 percent of their roots are severed causing growth to be interrupted and the onset of a major stress cycle for the tree. Field grown trees can spend up to a year and a half in this cycle of no-growth and major stress. Field grown trees are also much harder to plant because the root ball is so large.

In addition to “Ball and Burlap,” don’t be fooled by the potted trees and low pricing offered by big box stores. These trees are not acclimated to the local climate and are not grown in the pots they are sold in. They are generally bare root trees that have very little root systems and, for the most part, very low survival rates.

Our Pot-in-Pot trees are planted in a plastic pot with special soil and then placed in an additional pot before they are put in the ground. Once put in the ground, they are under the same conditions as you would have at your home. The roots are never above ground and over heated by the sun and are not subject to sudden temperature changes which can cause stress. When “harvesting” pot-in-pot trees, no roots are severed because the initial pot is simply lifted out of the second pot and the tree is “harvested.” This virtually eliminates transplant shock and promotes first year growth. Pot-in-Pot trees are actively growing at our nursery all the way up to point of purchase and then continue to grow with no interruption as they are bought and planted at your home.

Pot-in-Pot trees maintain the integrity of their roots in their individual pots and can be planted in much smaller holes. The trees are locally grown and acclimated to the local climate therefore they experience minimal stress when relocated. Please come visit our Nursery and Garden Center.
